hi everyone, i'm a member on goldie forum and get a lot of tips and advice from there. i thought i would pass this on.
a member caught her dog in a friends bag and it looked like it was eating chewing gum. she had read somewhere about xylitol.
the vet said it was her first case and was unsure how to treat. they gave her charcoal to make her vomit, she had.
xylitol causes dogs to secrete insulin so their blood sugar drops very quickly. the second thing that happens is liver failure, if that happens it can be hard to save them.
her dog was transferred to another hospital and put on critical list, she ended up with an ivl and round the clock monitoring, luckily it survived.
please tell your friends with dogs about the dangers of xylitol in sugar free gum.
