Ben the collie

Postby Rik_H on Tue Sep 09, 2008 11:33 pm

Well this is a rags to riches story for one dog.
Ben is a collie from a rough home he came to Jill and Jill asked us so now we are the new foster parents.
We already have two huskeymutes and they are a handfull lol.
Well he is home after a wonderfull car journey he was a star, just wanted to watch the world go by. He must have thought things can only get better now.
He as settled in quiet well for a first night, he is in the kitchen with ours only they are in crates and he has the run of it all well the kitchen anyway.
Some things are quiet apparent straight off he does not like open cupboard doors or enclosed spaces.
He is eating but not a lot but saying that he does have a little weight that he can lose, he drinks ok so no worries for now.
As for training he will sit and down on command also he will leave food untill told plus you can take food away with no problems.
Games are already a must as he will throw the ball to you just in case you missed the hint of the wide eyes and frantic wagging of the old tail.
All this said he is a mans dog my wife can give him commands all night and nothing, I say it once and its done. I dont think this will be an issue with a little good advice from Jill all should be well
Ok so its 00:30 hrs and we are both tired so thats it for the fist install of Bens new life (well this life starts at 42 dog or 6 human years and things will get better)

Quick update on Ben - He's been with us since Tuesay night which as you can imagine was slightly disturbed (got woken up at 4.00am by him barking which we're not used to having Huskys) but Wednesday night he was a star again and no a murmur from him till I went into the kitchen at 7.00am and there he was tail wagging waiting to say hello. :D

He's doing really well in the home situation, has sorted out our two husky pups well and is keeping them in check. As far as an extra dog in the house we really dont know he's there, he will come in and settle down on his bed in the kitchen or his blanket in the lounge and as long as he's with us he's more than happy. Gill and Nikki are keeping him occupied at creche during the day and he's worn out by evening lol. He travels really well in the car too.

He's definitely won our hearts over and we'll miss him when he moveds on.

Tuesday update
Ben is going from strength to strength. Last night when he came home from day care he came in and said hello to our two pups and then went outside and found his ball, barked and told us he wanted to play. 15 minutes later all 3 where worn out from chasing the ball around the garden and happily settled inside for tea and a sprawl on the lounge floor lol.
Looks like Ben might have found a new home in the future, so we might only have him for a couple of weeks more but he has done us the world of good and we are even talking about fostering others as we have enjoyed seeing him change from the shaking nervous wreck that arrived a week ago to a contented dog who is slowly finding his feet again and looking better every day.

So in response.... we are only fostering and not going to keep him lol - (yes the thought had occured to both of us lol) but not sure that we won't eventually keep one - watch this space : :)

Update - Wednesday 1st October 2008

Ben has left us a couple of weeks ago, he has moved on to live with our very good friends who live across the road from us and knows he has fallen on his feet

These are our friends who a few years ago said 'we're not going to get any fish' and when some appeared in their pond started them off and now they are very in to their Koi - pets are so well looked after with them but I think Ben has finally got the best deal as when he moved in they were definite that he was sleeping in the kitchen on a night and had the largest 'Scooby Doo' bean bag bed bought for him as well as other toys such as a squecky stuffed monkey (which he loves) but we did hear this weekend that Ben has moved into the bedroom on a night (feet well under the table) All joking apart we can see Ben coming on day to day and we all went out for a walk on Sunday night (Ben, Lou and Dash and all the humans) and it was lovely to see him running around with his tennis ball like a collie does.

So the final comment is to wish Rose and Chad all the best for the future with him and Lou and Dash say 'come back and play with us soon' 8)

Ben is doing great, he has found a good home with rose and chad. He keeps getting better and better when he is in the creche, always bringing balls and toys for me to tug with him. He also now plays with the other dogs. he likes to play with Chester a new creche dog they have been playing tug of war. Rose and Chad could not have found a nicer dog.
